Learn our best practices and guidelines for using artificial intelligence for Louisiana Tech University communications and licensing.
As AI becomes more common in the workplace, University Communications wants to remind users of several things to consider. We are humans, and our work depends on the trust we build with our audience. Generative AI tools deal in probabilities, not certainties, and therefore are assistive, not autonomous. The final result is your responsibility.
Content created with the help of AI must adhere to Louisiana Tech’s brand guidelines governing matters such as fonts, colors, design conventions, logo usage, editorial style, and voice and tone. Below are usage guidelines that apply to anyone creating marketing, communications, and licensed materials on behalf of Louisiana Tech University.
Acceptable uses of AI
Idea creation
Using AI to generate or improve ideas is acceptable. AI may assist, but humans must author, review, and approve the final work.
Automating repetitive or tedious tasks
This may include outlining meeting notes, summarizing dense research or academic copy, or editing batches of photos.
Prohibited uses of AI
Creating or modifying branding elements
Never use AI to create Louisiana Tech logos, mascots, or to identify brand colors. This includes not using AI to generate designs for merchandise, commercials, or other collateral using the university’s brand elements.
Creating AI-generated photography and videography
If you need an image or video asset for marketing materials, photograph, record, license, or commission it rather than generating it with AI. University Communications curates several SmugMug galleries for campus use. For assistance with photography or videography for marketing materials, please contact our multimedia team.
Please avoid all use of AI-generated photos on websites, including photos of:
- Campus scenes
- noteworthy landmarks
- logos or mascots
- people
Creating entire works using only AI
Never use AI to generate entire pieces (designs, copy, or social media posts) without human intervention. Always review AI-generated content and visuals for accuracy, clarity, originality, style, tone, etc.
Creating any emergency or crisis communication using only AI
Crisis communication or real-time, sensitive, and reputation-sensitive messaging requires thoughtful human insight and consideration.
